Welcome, this site is designed to help all who are engaged in or about to engage in cultivation of pot-belied pigs, as well as for those who want to learn more about these animals.
Let's start in order - I Prikhodko Oksana Antonovna since 2004 engaged in cultivation and breeding Pot-bellied pig. According to my practice I remember how hard it is to start a business from scratch, because nowhere is no reliable information on keeping and breeding of Pot-bellied pigs.
On these pages I will try to answer all the questions of breeders and those who are only going to deal with "Pot-bellied". The site will be available not only my articles republished many times, but also a lot of new, not previously published information. At the beginning let's define so where to begin. In cultivation of Pot-bellied pigs, as in any other form of livestock can select the area such important aspects:
- Conditions of your fucher herd
- Planning and the right choice for your farm pigs,
- Food supply.
In addition, we also talk about mating, pregnancy and childbirth pot-belied pigs, as well as touch on-farm breeding.
And now we'll talk about the myths that go about Pot-bellied pigs:
I picked up his flock from different regions of Ukraine and Hungary. I had to face as a conscientious breeders, and not so. I did not know features of the exterior, no one has qualified information on feeding, breeding and Pot-bellied pigs. Had to find information on the Internet, read the literature on animal, trying to find a middle ground. Summing up his five-year activity, declare that breeding pigs

Pot-bellied economically viable and very fun. It should be noted that there are many myths and speculation about the Pot-bellied pigs, some of which I would like to debunk.
Myth One: Pot-bellied pigs eat mostly grass, so taking care of their feeding disappear themselves.
The answer: not true. Of course, the pigs can be planted exclusively on pasture, but are unlikely to be large weights and worthy offspring.
The second myth: in travail sows do not need help, they all occur naturally in the wild.
The answer: not true. In my experience, there were cases when the sow "otrozhalis" yourself, but this is not always passed without consequences for the litter. Some pigs birth last long, up to eight hours, and if a pig for an hour to not let the nipple that he received colostrum, it is likely that such a pig can be lost. Of course, if there is an opportunity to better present at birth and help pig in this delicate matter.
Myth Three: to months of age pigs weigh up to 10 kg ..
The answer: not true. In months of age (average weight) 4 -5 kg. Sometimes come across some instances that a month weigh 6 kg. and more, but it is rather the exception. Weight of 10 kg. match piglets aged from two to three months.
I start each pig birthday card, which noted the special external signs. Once in ten days, I spend checkweighing, note especially in the development and behavior. On the third and tenth day of life spend prevention of anemia with iron, which is also in zanoshu card.
Myth Four: Pot-bellied pigs rarely get sick and have a strong immune system.
Answer: true. During the years of observation, there was not a single case of disease. Pot-bellied pigs differ magnificent genetic memory. They never eat poisonous plants and not poisoned. The only thing to remember - is prevention of worms that I spend on a regular basis, starting in 45 days, and then on a quarterly basis, the following medications: Ekomektin (ivermectin) subcutaneously or Albendozdol or Fonbendazol food. Pot-bellied pig touchy, from poor care they may develop depression.
The transition to new types of feed the pigs sometimes happen intestinal disorders. For the little ones, I have been successfully applied normal "smectite" solution which I pour pigs using a syringe or enema. Piglets older helps "Biovit." I add it to the food. My pigs from morning to evening are on roaming, which is very positive effect on their development. I had to watch the pigs contained no walking. I said they have underdeveloped muscles, some looseness, deformation hooves. For their pigs, I organized a sandbox and a mud pool, for me they are very grateful.
To piglets were strong and better developed, I add them vitamins such as "Kalfostonik" or "Chiktonik" use premixes and supplements, such as "PRELAC."
Myth Five: Pot-bellied pigs are very precocious and already five months of age they can be paired.
Answer: true, but partially. Pot-bellied pigs really become sexually mature early. Pigs in three or four months, and boars, are generally starting from months of age, begin to train and practice in the production of offspring. After numerous observations, I concluded that pigs should fend for boars, only when they reach the weight of 30-32 kg, not before. Only in this way can we hope for a strong, healthy, numerous offspring.
Myth Six: Pot-bellied pig meat is tender, juicy, contains no fat.
A: As for meat, though, but the fat is present, the thickness of two or three fingers. Fat and lard have plenty of flavor.
And finally, the seventh myth: Pot-bellied pigs eat very little, so the content is very favorable in comparison with other pigs. Answer: and it is true. Adult pigs eat often, but a little. Food costs account for 40-50 cents on the adult. Piglets cost a bit more expensive, however, as the pregnant females, because their diet is introduced more kontskormov as well as feed additives such as Liprot. Details of the diet can be found in the section on feeding, I note only that the pigs eat grass variety, but more willing to regale clover, alfalfa, amaranth. Winter feed hay, which I previously harvested. Hay bedding and serves them at the same time feed. Winter is a great help pumpkin. I give it alone or add steamed in concentrated feed.
Success in breeding Pot-bellied pigs depends on the purchased calves and your diligence.
I want to say that those people who claim otherwise - do not or never engaged in cultivation of this breed, or, worse yet deliberately disingenuous.
Now highlight the features of Pot-bellied rock, for which I would not give up their culture in favor of classical swine breeds (let us call them - "white")
1. docile nature, balanced psyche - it appears that the sow never eat pigs, do not refuse to nurse the litter, in the mornings and evenings in a pigsty not worth the heart-rending shrieks, as in pig, which is grown "white" pigs, and all communication with the "Pot-bellied" more like a man's relationship with his dog than with a pig.
2. precocity and prolific - 2 farrowing per year, which is a standard, with an average number of pigs per litter 11-13 (more here)
3. Excellent return feed about three feed units per kilogram body weight gain, while fattening the shortage of concentrated feed can be replaced succulent and green fodder and 80% of the total diet nutritionally. (more here and here)
4. Exceptional cleanliness - Pot-bellied pigs have always shared a cell with "bedroom" and "toilet", which is much easier to clean, and generally in a room with "Pot-bellied" no foul smell pigsty.
In any textbook on pig says that pig "... are omnivores." I want to say that Pot-bellied pigs in this regard are no different from their counterparts traditional domestic breeds.
To improve the productivity of Pot-bellied pigs are the most important feeding, care and maintenance. Before you start talking about nursing, I would like to thank the many readers who have sent letters. I very carefully several times re-read the questions asked to me. It became clear that the failures and problems often occur not only from the acquired defective calves, but by not understanding the optimal conditions of feeding and housing of animals. Unfortunately, many people, reading articles, including mine, have decided to breed Pot-bellied pigs, unprepared, without calculating the forces and capabilities.
It is known that pigs acquire or tribe, or for growing fattening. Who started indiscriminate, excessive cultivation of this species in the tribe. I want to warn you that if you do not create the conditions for fodder, if you can not provide the proper care of animals, content, including paddock, then you do not need to grow pigs for breeding. This is especially true of breeders enthusiasts living in cities and towns where hard to comply with all of the above conditions.
It is important to determine the strategy and tactics of fattening pigs. Fattening - is the main objective of any breeding pigs, including Pot-bellied. Decisive influence on the economic results of fattening provides feed consumption per unit of weight gain. Only if done right, you can get a cheap fattening pork very high quality. It is necessary to carefully keep records of all feed consumed as purchased or produced on his farm. Relative costs and benefits, you can determine the efficiency of domestic pig.
Once again, that the breeding of pigs, or for fattening, whether a tribe is a highly profitable occupation, but only when you have the possibility to grow crops or to purchase them first hand, by preparing a mixture of high-calorie, meeting the highest standards of quality .
